Wall Protection Application Case for Senior Care Facilities
Project Overview
This case is implemented at the core medical-nursing complex under a leading local chain senior care brand in Jinan, Shandong Province. With a total floor area of 23,000 square meters and 320 senior care beds, the facility covers five core functional zones: independent living apartments for self-care seniors, semi-disabled care areas, exclusive dementia care zones, rehabilitation training centers and public activity halls. It is a 3-star senior care institution certified by the Jinan Civil Affairs Bureau. This wall protection upgrading project is fully customized around the physical and behavioral characteristics of the elderly and the special operation and maintenance demands of senior care scenarios, finally delivering a full-dimensional wall solution that balances safety protection, age-friendliness and long-term easy maintenance.
Core Pre-renovation Pain Points
Before the renovation, the original walls of the facility had long faced exclusive operation and maintenance challenges unique to senior care scenarios:
Semi-disabled and dementia seniors frequently lean against or unconsciously pat the walls during daily activities. The original latex paint walls developed widespread peeling and dents within less than one year, and sharp protrusions even appeared at some corners, which posed high risks of scratching the elderly.
Walking aids and nursing beds frequently collided with walls during daily transfers. The cold and hard surface of ordinary tiles would easily cause secondary injuries to passing seniors once a collision occurred.
Traditional walls had numerous wide seams, which easily retained mold and peculiar odors after long-term cleaning and disinfection. Mold spots even appeared on the walls of humid public bathing areas, failing to meet the hygiene and infection control standards for senior care institutions.
The original walls adopted high-gloss paint, which created strong reflections under indoor lighting. The harsh light would easily irritate the vision of the elderly, especially dementia residents, and induce negative emotions such as anxiety and irritability.
Scenario-based Customized Protection Solution
The project team developed differentiated wall protection systems tailored to the characteristics of different care zones:
Exclusive Dementia Care Zone: The entire area is covered with 2.5mm thick high-toughness soft matte resin wall panels. The panels are embedded with long-acting antibacterial masterbatch that automatically inhibits mold and harmful bacteria attached to the wall surface. The 30-degree matte surface completely avoids light reflections that irritate the seniors' vision. The panels feature high elastic cushioning performance, which will not get damaged even if seniors pat or lean against them with full force, eliminating hard collision injuries. All wall edges are finished with arc transitions, leaving no sharp corners anywhere to fundamentally remove scratch risks.
Semi-disabled Care Areas and Public Passages: Thickened multi-layer composite anti-collision wall panels are installed, paired with matching high-elastic anti-collision handrails. The panels deliver an impact resistance 10 times higher than ordinary latex paint walls, and will not dent or get damaged even under direct impacts from nursing beds or walking aid trolleys. Made of ENF-grade eco-friendly base material, the panels produce no peculiar smell during installation, and the area can be put into use on the delivery day without irritating seniors with underlying respiratory diseases.
Public Activity Areas and Zones Around Bathing Spaces: B1-class fireproof and moisture-proof dedicated senior care wall panels are selected. The seams of the panels are processed with hot-melt seamless treatment, completely eliminating gaps that accumulate dirt. Daily disinfection can be completed by directly wiping the walls with chlorine-containing disinfectants, and the panels will never get moldy or warp even in long-term high-humidity environments.
Color Adaptation Optimization: All wall surfaces in the facility adopt low-saturation warm beige and light pea green color schemes, which fully fit the color perception habits of the elderly. The design avoids high-saturation bright colors that may induce emotional fluctuations, and low-contrast color guidance markers are added at key corners in the dementia zone to help seniors build spatial awareness and reduce disorientation anxiety.
Post-delivery Outcomes and Operation Feedback
Two years after the project was delivered and put into operation, actual operation data shows that the wall collision damage rate across the facility has dropped by 95%. The quarterly wall touch-up maintenance work that used to be required can now be extended to more than 6 years before a full-scale renovation is needed, reducing the annual wall operation and maintenance cost by 88%. The facility successfully passed the special hygiene and safety inspection for senior care institutions in Shandong Province, and the total bacterial count on the wall surfaces is far lower than the national hygiene standard for senior care venues. The incidence of collision-related accidental injuries among residents has decreased by 72% compared with that before the renovation, and the frequency of nighttime restlessness and wandering behaviors among dementia residents has dropped significantly. This wall protection solution has become a demonstration sample for age-friendly renovation of senior care institutions promoted by the Jinan Civil Affairs Bureau, and has been referenced and implemented by 17 other senior care institutions across Shandong Province later.
